HHS Releases Final EHR Rules for Incentive Programs, 2015 Edition Health IT

Under the 2009 economic stimulus package, providers who demonstrate meaningful use of certified electronic health records can qualify for Medicaid and Medicare incentive payments.

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) runs the Meaningful Use program, and it recently released its final rules for Stage 3, which pertains to electronic health records, according to a MedPage Today report.

While it isn’t the Stage 3 meaningful use delay that many stakeholders are anxious to see, HHS has finally allowed the healthcare industry to view and comment on the flexibility provisions for the EhR Incentive Programs, which will primarily affect Stage 2 meaningful use attestation between 2015 and 2017. The changes include implementing a 90-day reporting period and adjusting the reporting period for hospitals from the federal fiscal year to the calendar year. Stage 3 requirements are optional in 2017, although those providers who choose to start Stage 3 that year will have a 90-day reporting period, CMS said. “HIMSS encourages reasonable meaningful use-related rules and timelines, as these enable providers to continue their participation in the program, thus supporting a positively transformed health system”. “We eliminated unnecessary requirements, simplified and increased flexibility for those that remain, and focused on interoperability…” For the full article click here
