Health officials: 37 sickened by E. coli; most ate at Chipotles

Washington and Oregon officials say that 37 have been sickened by E. coli. That’s an increase from the previously reported 22. In addition, officials confirmed that most ate at Chipotles.

Tuesday afternoon, the Washington State Department of Health confirmed they now have 25 cases of Shiga toxin producing E. coli. 23 of those patients ate at the restaurant chain before falling ill.

Five locations in Washington are tied to the outbreak: Hazel Dell, 7715 NE 5th Avenue, Suite 109, in Vancouver; 1404 Broadway Avenue and 4229 University Way NE in Seattle; 512 Ramsey Way 101 in Kent; and 1753 S. Burlington Blvd. in Burlington.

Dr. Jeff Duchin, an epidemiologist with Seattle-King County Public Health, says tracing a source with this type of food is challenging.

“They’re complicated dishes with multiple ingredients and many of the dishes use the same ingredients,” said Duchin. “That really limits our ability to teeth out from the food history what might be the culprit. That’s why we really rely on our colleagues in environmental health and food safety to do that product traceback.” For the full article click here
