Mental Health: It Matters: CA Man Survives Suicide Attempt; Working to Help Those with Depression

For the younger generation, suicide is the second leading cause of death in Minnesota and the 9th leading cause in North Dakota, that’s according to each state’s Health and Human Service Department. The CDC has called it an epidemic. In our Mental Health: It Matters, one man is trying to change those statistics.

An emotional few moments for Kim Shiek as she knows exactly what this speaker is going through. Her family suffers from depression.

“It’s sad and it’s hard, but you just plug away,” says Shiek.

She joined the crowd who came to hear Kevin Hines speak about his battle with depression. Hines, at 19-years-old jumped off the Golden Gate Bridge. He survived with serious injuries. With the support of his family and friends, he turned his life around, going around the globe reaching out to others.

“For us to talk about that word (suicide), taking the power away from it and educate people about it rather than sensationalize about suicide, that is what creates change and that is what we are trying to do,” says Hines.

Mental health experts say if your child stops doing an activity they usually love, or pull away from friends, that could be a sign that they’re struggling. They say to talk to them about it.
