IBM Announces New Products, Partnerships for Watson Health

On Thursday, IBM announced new products and partnerships relating to Watson Health, Healthcare IT News reports (Wicklund,Healthcare IT News, 9/10).

Watson Health aims to leverage data analytics to improve the efficiency and quality of personal health (iHealthBeat, 4/14).

Details of New Products

According to the announcement, new products include:

  • Watson Care Manager, which aggregates patient data from different sources, such as wearables and smart scales, into a cloud platform that providers can view (Bowman, FierceHealthIT, 9/10); and
  • Watson Health Cloud For Life Compliance, which can be used by biomedical firms for building applications, products and analytics to support clinical trial management without having their own data center.

According to Health Data Management, the Watson Health Cloud was designed for supporting a highly regulated environment (Goedert, Health Data Management, 9/10).

Details of Partnerships

In addition, Watson Health has formed new partnerships with:

  • Boston Children’s Hospital, which will use Watson services for big data analytics to support personalized medicine (Healthcare IT News, 9/10);
  • Columbia University Medical, where oncologists will use Watson services to develop personalized treatments for patients with cancer (FierceHealthIT, 9/10);
  • ICON plc, a clinical research organization that will use Watson services to match patients with appropriate clinical trials;
  • Sage Bionetworks, a not-for-profit that will use Watson Health Cloud for aggregating, analyzing, curating and storing data from Apple ResearchKit apps (Health Data Management, 9/10); and
  • Teva Pharmaceuticals, which will use Watson Health Cloud for building tools for individuals with complex and chronic conditions (IBM Watson Health release, 9/10).

Meanwhile, Watson Health’s global headquarters opened in Cambridge, Mass., on Thursday (FierceHealthIT, 9/10). The location will be the hub for many of the new partnerships (Healthcare IT News, 9/10).
