H&HN Recognizes 338 Hospitals in 17th Annual ‘Most Wired’ List

On Thursday, Hospitals & Health Networks released its 17th annual list of the nation’s “Most Wired” hospitals, recognizing more than 300 hospitals for successful health IT planning and implementation,Healthcare IT News reports (McCann, Healthcare IT News, 7/9).

Survey Details

The list was compiled through a survey of more than 741 participants, representing about 2,213 hospitals. The survey was conducted between Jan. 15 and March 15.

It was conducted in partnership with the:

• American Hospital Association; and
• College of Healthcare Information Management Executives.

The survey evaluated hospitals based on how they use health IT in four areas:

• Business and administrative management;
• Clinical integration;
• Infrastructure; and
• Quality and safety (Monegain, Healthcare IT News, 7/9).

Survey Findings

Overall, 338 hospitals made the “Most Wired” list (McCann, Healthcare IT News, 7/9).

According to EHR Intelligence, the results of the survey showed that patient engagement and data security are among the top concerns of U.S. hospitals (Gruessner, EHR Intelligence, 7/9).

Specifically, the survey found that:

• 96% of hospitals on the “Most Wired” list reported using intrusion-detection systems, compared with 85% of survey respondents overall;
• 83% of hospitals on the “Most Wired” list said that cybersecurity risk was included in their board’s oversight of risk management and reduction; and
• 79% of hospitals on the “Most Wired” list reported conducting exercises for incident response or tabletop tests each year, compared with 37% of survey respondents overall.

Meanwhile, the survey also found that:

• 89% of “Most Wired” hospitals offer patient portals through a mobile application (Monegain,Healthcare IT News, 7/9);
• 67% of “Most Wired” hospitals have a method to integrate patient-generated data; and
• 63% of “Most Wired” hospitals have patient tools for managing chronic disease (EHR Intelligence, 7/9).

In addition, 81% of “Most Wired” hospitals use emails or alerts to communicate with patients, compared with 63% of respondents overall.

Further, the survey found hospitals are using health IT to facilitate the exchange of data across care settings. For example:

• 84% of hospitals on the “Most Wired” list said their portals allow physicians to view and exchange data with other facilities, compared with 63% of survey respondents overall; and
• 76% of hospitals on the “Most Wired” list reported using their portal and electronic health record system to exchange data with other EHRs and health information exchanges, compared with 56% of survey respondents  overall (Monegain, Healthcare IT News, 7/9).
