Borgess Health minimum wage raised to $11 following move by Ascension Health

KALAMAZOO, MI – A number of Borgess Health employees received good news ahead of the holiday weekend Friday when its parent organization announced the company was raising the minimum wage for its member hospitals to $11 per hour.

The change will impact 97 of Borgess Health’s more than 4,200 employees, said Borgess spokesman Lew Tysman.

Borgess Health is a member of Ascension Health. It includes 13 acute care hospitals and hundreds of care facilities in the Midwest, South, Northwest, Southwest, southern and eastern U.S.

“We believe our associates deserve a socially just wage that acknowledges the dignity of the human person and the spiritual significance of the care they provide every day to those we serve and to their fellow associates,” Ascension President and CEO Anthony R. Tersigni said in a press release.

Borgess President and CEO Kathy A. Young said the company respects the “dignity of the individual and the vital contributions” of Borgess employees in a prepared statement following the announcement.

The new wage will take effect beginning July 5, according to the release.

The Michigan legislature passed wage increases last year, raising the minimum to $8.15 on Labor Day, with a gradual rise set to reach $9.25 by 2018.

The federal minimum wage currently sits at $7.25 per hour, although President Barack Obama has advocated for increasing that figure to $10.10 per hour.

About 7 percent of Ascension’s more than 150,000 employees nationwide will be “directly helped in some way” by the change, the release said. Some of positions affected include aides and assistants; employees who work in laundry, environmental, housekeeping, and food and nutrition services; receptionists and administrative assistants and admitting staff.

Ascension employees in “most markets” currently are paid a minimum wage that ranges from $9 to $10, the release said.

The wage change will also affect employees who work in staff positions at affiliated organizations that work within Ascension facilities. It does not apply to students, interns or contracted associates residing internationally.
