Rep. Erik Paulsen: Med device tax may soon be repealed

The medical device tax may soon be repealed, according to Rep. Erik Paulsen (R-Minn.).

Paulsen said the industry should see it “get across the finish line at some point this year” during the MedTech Investor Conference in Minneapolis, according toMedCity News.

The tax has seen its fair share of criticism. Groups have called the tax a job killer. The Medical Device Manufacturers Association, in a survey of 100 executives, found that three-quarters of companies reduced or stopped hiring to pay the new tax. Meanwhile, the Advanced Medical Technology Association warned that as many as 39,000 jobs are on the line due to the tax, FierceHealthIT previously reported.

A repeal of the tax was Paulsen’s first effort in the 114th Congress. In January, he introduced the Protect Medical Innovation Act to broad bipartisan support

The Ways and Means committee will meet June 2 to find out the best time to launch new legislation, Paulsen added. He said the repeal is his “key passion right now.”
