Health IT Gaining Traction in Long-Term and Post-Acute Care Settings

Until recently, Long-Term and Post-Acute Care (LTPAC) providers have been left out of Meaningful Use and other government mandated health IT incentives, causing a slower rate of HIT adoption among those care providers. Yet in late May, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) proposed a rule promoting incentive payments and health information exchange at a state level. The proposed rule encourages Medicaid managed-care plans to fund the purchase of electronic health records (EHR) software for behavioral health, long-term care and other providers previously excluded from federal EHR payments.  Because of this, along with other mandates for electronic prescribing in New York and Minnesota, and the fact that CMS lifted its e-prescribing exemption for long-term care facilities in November 2014, the demand for health IT in the LTPAC market has grown substantially.

Surescripts recently expanded its e-prescribing technology to PointClickCare, the leading cloud-based software platform for the senior care market. With this addition, more than 10,000 senior care facilities using PointClickCare will now have access to industry-leading electronic prescribing technology to fill gaps in care and reduce costs when patients move from one facility to another.

Surescripts is attending AHIMA’s annual LTPAC HIT Summit in Baltimore this month. As it is the first time we are attending, we look forward to learning from and engaging with attendees, discussing what we’ve seen so far with New York’s iSTOP mandate and other regulations driving the industry from paper/fax to a more digital healthcare environment.  We also will look for ways Surescripts can help resolve issues, whether with new solutions or with some of our other services including Formulary & Benefits, Eligibility, CompletEPA™, clinical messaging, medication history, and more.
