Alton Towers to reopen today for first time since rollercoaster crash but four of the park’s top rides will still be closed

Alton Towers will reopen for the first time tomorrow since the terrifying rollercoaster crash which left four people seriously injured – but park officials have warned that some rides will remain closed.

The theme park has been closed for five consecutive days after a carriage carrying 16 people on The Smiler ride smashed into an empty stationary car, leaving four victims in hospital with horrific injuries.

Government officials are set to start their formal investigation into the incident tomorrow, but the Staffordshire-based theme park will reopen to the public from 10am.

However, Alton Towers confirmed that four rides would remain closed – Oblivion, Enterprise, Sonic Spinball and The Smiler.

Oblivion and Enterprise will be shut for a short period as they are located next to The Smiler and the area has been closed off by the Health and Safety Executive for investigations to take place.

The park stressed that there was no concern over the safety of the two rides, insisting they are only closed because they are situated next to The Smiler which officials need access to over the coming days.

Sonic Spinball will also be closed tomorrow while the enhanced safety protocols brought in during the immediate aftermath of last Tuesday’s crash are carried out.

Nick Varney, chief executive of Merlin Entertainments which owns Alton Towers, said the public can return to the park ‘with confidence’ after the horror crash.
